Clarisse Genton (doctorante ACS/AUSser) : Settlements in the Occupied Territories: A Frontline Outpost of the Israeli Regime Crisis
Résumé : The transfer of the Civil Administration from Ministry of Defence to Ministry of the Interior set a precedent, which animated the 2023 demonstrations. The current war situation calls into question the strategic and military role of the settlements. The ambiguities of the administrative management of housing construction in these areas were already present. We propose an architectural analysis of the geopolitics of these territories.
The diversity of the forms of civilian occupation [Weizman 2003] tells the story of their installation in the West Bank over the past five decades, with political and economic changes influencing the discourses related to these places. Describing and analyzing the places and the means used to establish them gives us an understanding of the spatial strategies of settlement on a territorial scale, but we would like to make explicit how the architectural forms of housing within these neighborhoods legitimize Israel`s colonial activities, seeking to erase the difference between the land of Israel and the Israeli state. This analysis highlights the permanent European influence on architectural trends which runs through the history of Israeli architecture. New hybrid forms appear and compete with the former hegemony.
The paper is based on our thesis work in architecture and the methodology is based on the observation of two case studies, Ramot in East Jerusalem and Ma`ale Adumim on the outskirts of the holy city. Based on our urban explorations, interviews with planning actors and an analysis of building plans archives, the paper presents the partial results of our research.
