Présentation par les organisateurs : The VIII AISU Congress deals with the topic of the city as a travel destination in its long historical evolution. Throughout its history, travelling has been considered as a primary need for men, as an event aimed at knowledge, education, business and trade, as a military or religious achievement, but also as an exodus to merely reach the physical
or spiritual salvation. The Congress will be a privileged viewpoint through which get to know, tell, represent, and exalt the city and its territory, describe its landscape, identify its monumental and social aggregation centers, places that are useful to characterize the identity of the city in the context of its many inexorable transformations from the ancient to the contemporary age. The historic city, therefore, will be investigated as the scene for the artistic, literary and goods production related to travel, and also, in its more recent role, as a formidable attractor of the new cultural and tourist industry. In the frame of one of the most celebrated historic cities in the world, Naples, cradle of Greek antiquity, of myth and beauty, a timeless destination for cultural and pleasure travels – today, more than ever, definitely attentive to the preservation and valorisation of its own identity –, this Congress aims to offer, consistent with AISU’s tradition of studies, a further opportunity to reflect and compare many different disciplines concerning urban history. The Congress, coordinated by the Interdepartmental Research Center for Architectural and Environmental Heritage and Urban Planning (BAP) and by the Interdepartmental Research Center on the Iconography of the European City (CIRICE) of the University of Naples Federico II, will use a broad comparison among hundreds of national and international scholars who have adhered to our proposal on many issues related to urban history. We are sure that, once again, from this initiative the urban territory will emerge as the protagonist in its whole historical complexity, as an ancient phenomenon, but never more alive.
